Why INT2ACT?
I’m inspired by the INT2ACT network’s multidisciplinary approach, which unites experts across disciplines to harness the potential of nucleic acids in the fight against cancer—collaboration is the key to real breakthroughs.
Prof. Charles Lawrie is an Ikerbasque Research Professor, head of the Oncology Research Area and PI of the Molecular Oncology Group at the Biogipuzkoa Health Research Institute in Gipuzkoa, Spain.
Biogipuzkoa is a dedicated healthcare research centre and the Molecular Oncology group focuses on a multi-disiplinary approach to fighting cancer by combining the identification and validation of clinically useful biomarkers, development of novel diagnostic technologies and drug delivery systems, and the use of advanced therapeutic technologies.
My interest in non-invasive diagnostics stems from observing the pain and difficulties of cancer patients undergoing surgical biopsy when working in a hospital setting in Oxford. As my lab was supervised by one of the true pioneers of liquid biopsies, Prof. James Wainscoat who discovered fetal DNA in blood, my attention turned to the potential of nucleic acids, specifically miRNAs, as cancer biomarkers. Since this time my research has been focused on liquid biopsy biomarker discovery, diagnostic technology development and nucleic acid based therapeutics.
I obtained my bachelors and masters degree in Biochemistry, and carried out my doctorate at the University of Oxford. As a postdoc at the University of Oxford, I formed the Lymphoid Malignancy Research Group (LMRG), part of the Nuffield Department of Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NDCLS) which I led until 2011 when I joined Biogipuzkoa as an Ikerbasque Research Professor and head of the Oncology Area as well as leader of the Molecular Oncology Research Group.
